Charters Towers Regional Council has secured one berth on the national sail training ship “The Young Endeavour” for a voyage in 2023 and is now seeking applications from individuals interested in taking part this once in a lifetime experience.

Young people aged between 16 to 23 years of age who reside in the Charters Towers Region are encouraged to apply.

The 10 day voyage will set sail from Mackay on Tuesday, 18 July 2023 and arrive in Cairns on Friday, 28 July 2023.

Councillor Sonia Bennetto said Council is excited to be able to send one lucky young local on this unique adventure.

“You don’t need to have any experience sailing to apply, just an open mind, a willingness to learn and eagerness to expand your horizons,” said Councillor Bennetto.

The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme is recognised internationally as a leading youth development program, providing skills for life such as communication, leadership, teamwork, self-esteem and a greater understanding of self.

As most participants have never been to sea before, the youth crew are supervised and supported by carefully selected and trained Royal Australian Navy crew.

As one of the 24-strong youth crew, the successful candidate will meet the challenges of sailing the tall ship, including climbing the 30m mast, setting sails, navigating, keeping watch and taking the helm.

“This is sure to be a once in a lifetime experience for the successful applicant, one that they get to share with other youth crew from a diversity of places and backgrounds.

“Those who have previously undertaken voyages with Council’s support have expressed that the experience exceeded their expectations, and they would encourage anyone considering applying to not hesitate,” continued Cr Bennetto.

Applications will close at 4pm Friday, 31 March 2023.
