Livestock handling and how it impacts on an animal’s performance will be the focus of a dedicated training workshop to be held in February 2023 at the Dalrymple (H M Clarke) Saleyards, Charters Towers.

This is a joint initiative of Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) and Charters Towers Regional Council and is intended to improve safety for those within the livestock supply chain and achieve improved outcomes for the welfare of animals.

Participants will gain a better understanding of cattle behaviour and handling techniques and also provides a statement of attainment to verify knowledge and capability that is relevant to the specific freight task drivers are performing.

Councillor Bernie Robertson said Council is pleased to partner with QTA in this initiative which has been specifically designed to benefit a wide range of people in the Livestock Industry.

“The Workshop will be a valuable opportunity to learn from two very experienced facilitators, who have both had over 20 years working in the livestock industry”, said Councillor Robertson.

Tom Shepherd from Efficient Stockhandling Solutions, who will be facilitating the workshop, began his career managing cattle stations around Australia and, through his business, is now dedicated to educating people on how to work with livestock safely and efficiently.

Tom will be joined by special guest speaker Rick Young, who recently managed the Wainui Feedlot for NAPCO, and has undertaken extensive research around livestock, especially their eating habits, and performance being impacted by handling in the short and long term.

“The day will be hands on, incorporating theory and practical elements to create increased awareness, and give participants greater knowledge they can use on a daily basis during livestock handling”, continued Cr Robertson.

Organisers are keen to see people across the industry, including transport operators, agents, saleyard, feedlot and meat works staff, primary producers and younger people, such as vet students and high school cattle school students, attending the workshop.

Tickets are $55.00 per person and numbers will be limited.
