Daly Nature Reserve culturally planned burn

Published on 01 April 2021

Macedon Ranges Shire Council will be conducting a cultural planned burn, in partnership with Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung’s Narrap Team. The planned burn will take place at Daly Nature Reserve, Howey Street, Gisborne, during April, May or June depending on when weather conditions are suitable.

The Australian Government Community Environment Program Grant provided the funding for this project.

These burning activities are part of the ongoing management of the reserve to:

Promote cultural connection; Promote local biodiversity; and Moderate fuel loads and risk of wildfire in the area.

Burning operations will occur on days where weather conditions are cool and winds are light and consistent in direction to minimise risk and inconvenience to residents.

The community are welcome to attend the event. This is a great opportunity to see a controlled burn in action and learn about cultural burn practices from representatives of Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung.

As the specific date of the burn will only be determined a short time in advance, interested community members will receive an email notification once the day is confirmed which will include the location and meeting time. To register your interest in attending, contact Martin Roberts via email [email protected].

Numbers are limited, so only those registered and within the observer limit set will receive a confirmation email with details on when and how they can observe. Preference will be given to members of the Friends of Daly Nature Reserve and community members who register their interest early.

Council plans to film the cultural burn in order to enable the broader community to learn more about the activity.
