Council continues rolling out Check in TAS across its facilities

Published on 31 March 2021

The Director of Public Health has determined that, from 1 May 2021, the free Check in TAS app will be the only system used for collecting contact tracing information in Tasmania.

The Burnie City Council is required to collect contact tracing information under the existing Public Health direction, and is continuing the implementation of the Check in TAS system across its public facilities and events.

Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said “the public health direction applies to Council facilities including those that are leased to individuals, community groups and sports clubs. The breadth of the rollout is wide and includes facilities such as community halls, sports grounds, arts facilities as well as all Council run events.

“The Check in TAS app enables you to check-in and have your data stored securely with the Tasmanian Department of Health in the event that contact tracing is needed due to a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the community. Council will not hold or be able to view any of the data collected. The data will go straight to the Tasmanian Department of Health and all contact information collected through Check in TAS is automatically deleted after 28 days.”

The contact details of each individual, including everyone in a group, and employees/operators, must be recorded by scanning the Check in TAS QR code on entry to the premises. This simple process takes only a few seconds per patron.

If you use a smartphone, for your convenience, you should download the app if you have not done so already. There will be arrangements made for people who do not use smartphones, or others in your group will be able to check in for you.

FAQ’s and a link to the app download is available on the Tasmanian Department of Health’s dedicated Coronavirus website:

Council will begin contacting community groups and individuals who hire and lease Council buildings and facilities on a casual or ongoing basis to help them understand their new obligations when using Council facilities from 1 May. Council will ensure that QR codes are displayed at all of its facility entrances.

More detailed information will be made available on Council’s website closer to 1 May.
