Burnie Print Prize 2021 - Winner Announced

The 2021 Burnie Print Prize is awarded to Annika Romeyn from Wanniassa, ACT.

The winner of the major acquisitive prize of $15,000 for the Burnie Print Prize 2021 was announced this evening at the exhibition opening at Burnie Regional Art Gallery.

Artist, Annika Romeyn, from Wanniassa, ACT has tonight been awarded one of Australia’s most prestigious printmaking prizes for her watercolour monotype Guerilla Bay 3.

Judge Dianne Fogwell said it is “A powerful work from an emerging artist who shows a direct understanding of the landscape along with a mastery of her process. The work entices the viewer into a full engagement of her world. A good, strong, fresh work.

“Seven works were included in a final “short list” out of which the winner was chosen.

“I would like to thank my colleagues, Dr Roderick Ewins and Tracey Cockburn, for their participation in the judging of the prize, the Burnie City Councill and the Friends of Burnie Regional Art Gallery for their support of the Prize, and Burnie Regional Art Gallery staff for their wonderful presentation of the selected work” concluded Dianne Fogwell.

The judges also awarded three Highly Commended: Susanna Castleden for her graphite and gesso on rag paper 1:1 Expeditor (twin tail right), Cleo Wilkinson for her mezzotint print Vetiges and Megan McPherson for her relief printed etching on rice paper, pigment ink, glues Three bags full of that affect, while in anxious times.

The selection and final judging of the Burnie Print Prize 2021 was carried out by Dianne Fogwell Artist, printmaker, curator, lecturer, co-founder Studio One Print Shop and Founder/Director of the Criterion Press, Dr Roderick Ewins Artist, printmaker, Adjunct Researcher UTAS, former Head of the Tasmanian School of Arts and Tracey Cockburn Artist, printmaker, Arts & Cultural Development Coordinator – Clarence City Council.

The biennial Burnie Print Prize is jointly sponsored by the Burnie City Council and the Friends of the Burnie Regional Art Gallery and is valued at $15,000, making it one of the wealthiest prizes for printmaking in Australia.

The Public Vote Award, valued at $1000, will be revealed after the conclusion of the exhibition on 1 May 2021.

The Burnie Regional Art Gallery is open free to the public from 10am to 4.30pm weekdays and from 11am to 4pm on Saturdays. Closed Sundays and public holidays. Burnie Regional Art Gallery a Burnie City Council initiative and is assisted through Arts Tasmania by the Minister for the Arts.
