Gympie Regional Council is pleased to be hosting both the 2020 Australian Skateboarding League Queensland National Street Qualifier on Saturday 25 January and the Skate Australia National Park Championship on Sunday 26 January at the new Gympie Youth Precinct.

Saturday 25 January will see the 2020 Australian Skateboarding League Queensland National Street Qualifier, which has been tagged as Australia’s premier nationwide, amateur skateboarding series. The event is aimed at showcasing some of the country’s best up-and-coming skaters and will see each of the top five qualifiers from each session receive a place to compete in the Australian Skateboarding League National Street Championship in Melbourne.

Sunday 26 January is the Skate Australia National Park Championship, an internationally sanctioned event that is intended to attract top-level competition both nationally and internationally and a significant milestone for the new Gympie Youth Precinct.

Skateboarding will soon be an Olympic sport and this event has been endorsed as one of only a handful of competitions internationally for athletes to attract Olympic World Skateboarding Rankings (qualifying points) in the lead up for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on 24 July – 9 August.

Mayor Mick Curran said Council is working with the YMCA and Skate Australia to deliver the events.

“To have both the state qualifying event for Street and the Skate Australia National Park Championship is a testament to the quality and incredible high standard of the skate facilities at the new Gympie Youth Precinct.

What is very exciting is the Skate Australia National Park Championship event will list the facility as an international facility, putting Gympie on the map for any skating professional or those who enjoy the sport as recreation.

Part of our planning for the Youth Precinct was to build the facility to such a high standard so we would attract national events. To have these events booked just a month after opening is a great result.” said Mayor Curran.

The event positions Gympie as the only Park event on Australian soil to hold such an offering, and alongside other world skate ranking events held at Long Beach USA, Yancheng & Nanjing CHINA, Lima PERU, Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo BRAZIL during the OWSR qualification period 1 January 2019 – 31 May 2020.
