Western Park Oval 2 Officially Open for Play

Published on 08 April 2019

The Western Park Recreation Precinct in Warragul is now home to a new full-size, state-of-the-art oval to support growth of local cricket and football clubs.

The new oval was officially opened today by Mayor Cr Mikaela Power and Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing MP. Also there to join the opening celebrations was Deputy Mayor Cr Danny Goss, East Ward Cr Peter Kostos, Director Community Infrastructure Cohen Van der Velde, sport club representatives Tony Flack and Peter Croft, and Council staff involved in the project.

The overall scope of works includes:

Fully fenced, full-size oval with a mixture of summer and winter turf. Four turf wickets and an all-weather premium quality fifth synthetic cricket pitch. Automated irrigation system. Storage shed complete with kitchenette and one unisex toilet. Two coaches/players boxes and tired spectator seating (shade and shelter to come). AFL compliant goals and goal netting with additional safety netting around most of the oval. Electronic scoreboard. State of the art LED light towers for night training. Security lighting and LED solar pedestrian lights. Walking track along the outer oval.

Local sporting clubs who will benefit from the new oval for games and night training over winter include the Warragul Football Netball Club, Warragul Industrials Football Club, Western Park Cricket Club and Gippsland Grunters – each involved in the design of the new facility.

This $2 million project has been jointly funded by Baw Baw Shire Council and a $649,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund - Major Facilities, facilitated through Sport and Recreation Victoria.

Through this investment Council is proud to support improved access to quality sporting facilities, increased sport participation rates, maximising use of community assets as well as supporting better health and wellbeing outcomes for the community.

Quotes attributable to Mayor Cr Mikaela Power

"It’s great to see Council’s $1.3 million investment go towards supporting local grassroots sport. This project has been a real collaboration between Council, the Victorian Government, tenant clubs and Committee of Management and we thank everyone involved. We especially thank Harriet Shing MP and Sport and Recreation Victoria for their financial contribution, without that this would not have been possible.”

“Western Park Recreation Precinct is an incredibly important asset in our growing community. We’re so pleased to be able to deliver a new oval for local clubs to use and enjoy. This facility gives players and officials more than just a space to train and play - it shows they are part of a community that wants to see their teams prosper.”
