- City of Ballarat Infrastructure and Environment Director Terry Demeo

What construction works are taking place at Gregory Street West? Are they preparatory works to reopen the road?

The Gregory Street West construction is a City of Ballarat project, with the tender awarded in December 2018.  The works commenced recently via Wayne Horne Earthmoving who was the successful tenderer.

Are works to reopen the road still under funding for part two of the Ballarat Link Road?

The project is separately funded from any Ballarat Link Road funding, with the specific budget provided by Council’s capital works program.

If this is in relation to reopening the road, when can residents expect works to be completed?

The intention is to reopen the entirety of the road to provide for traffic access from Ballarat Link Road through to Gillies Street.  The project is anticipated to be completed in mid 2019.

If works are being undertaken to reopen the road, where did funding come from? Why was a decision made to start works to reopen it now?

Funding came from Council’s Capital Program Budget.  The reason for progressing this now is to enhance the east west connectivity’s through Ballarat.

What needs to be done on the corner of Gillies Street and Gregory Street West to make the intersection safe? Will council recommend to VicRoads the creation of traffic lights?

Council’s commitment to this project was on the basis of the $56 million commitment through the state election process from the now State Government under the Keeping Ballarat Moving banner, which includes the Gillies Street, Gregory Street signalisation works.  Council will be working with VicRoads to expedite the delivery of these signals in order to allow complete access between Gregory Street West and Gillies Street. However, there may be interim intersection works in advance of the delivery by VicRoads of the signalised intersection.
