Candle lighting vigil shows solidarity against domestic violence

Redlands Coast will join in a nationwide one minute’s silence at 6pm on 1 May to remember those who have lost their lives to domestic or family violence.

Redland City Council strongly supports Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month that is held each May in Queensland to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence (DFV).

Mayor Jos Mitchell said a candle lighting vigil will be held at Raby Bay Harbour Park Shore Street West, Cleveland, from 5.30pm on 1 May as part of the month’s events and will correspond with the minute’s silence around the country.

“The Redlands Coast Candle Lighting Vigil is an annual event to remember and pay respect to those who have tragically lost their lives because of acts of domestic and family violence,” she said.

“It is also a sign of solidarity and support. We are a community wanting safe family environments and a community speaking up and speaking out to help create change.”

The Mayor said Redlands Coast had several local organisations that were doing amazing work in the community in terms of DFV awareness, prevention and care, including The Centre for Women & Co, Redland Community Centre, and Maybanke Accommodation and Crisis Support Service.

“It is very difficult to know what to do when you’re experiencing domestic and family violence, but these organisations are an excellent avenue to reach out for help,” she said.

“Talking to a trusted friend, family member or a DFV service provider can help people understand their options and plan their future.

“Feeling safe and having somewhere to go is vital. We all want to see a future where everyone is respected and families and individuals are safe.”

The candle lighting vigil is presented by Council, together with the Centre for Women & Co and the Red Rose Foundation.

There is an optional Zonta and Soroptimist Walk the Talk walk with the group forming from 4.45pm at Kyling Corner, corner Waterloo and Middle streets, Cleveland. Starting at 5pm, participants will walk as a united group to Raby Bay Harbour Park for the candle lighting event.
