Detox Your Home service coming to Kerang

Published on 18 March 2024

Residents needing to rid their home of unused household chemicals will be able to do so for free this April.

Sustainability Victoria is bringing its Detox Your Home service to the Kerang Transfer Station on Saturday, 13 April from 11am-2pm.

“Since its development close to 30 years ago, the Detox Your Home program has resulted in the safe removal of around 7,000 tonnes of toxic chemicals and more than 10,000 tonnes of hard to recycle materials from Victorian households,” Gannawarra Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

Around 40 regular household items will be accepted for disposal, including:

Fuels and flammable liquids, such as turpentine, methylated spirits, petrol, kerosene, diesel and paint thinners. Garden products, including herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals and poisons. Household items, including cleaners, bleach, ammonia, oven cleaner, solvents, cooking oil, cosmetics and fire extinguishers. Car products, including car wax, transmission fluid, body filler and brake fluid.

Items that will not be accepted for collection include ammunition or firearms, asbestos, batteries, chemicals used by businesses and farms, gas bottles, motor oil and paint.

“There is no limit on the volume of materials you drop-off, however the maximum acceptable weight or size of any single container is 20 kilograms or 20 litres,” Mr Rollinson said.

“Decanting is not permitted, so please bring chemicals in disposal containers.”

To assist with organising this event, residents looking to drop off items are encouraged to register by visiting the Detox Your Home page at www.gsc.vic.gov.au/waste. This page also features a full list of items that can be accepted for disposal.
