City of Hobart takes action against surge in e-cigarette use

Published on 15 February 2024

The City of Hobart is concerned by the recent surge in e-cigarette (vape) usage particularly among young people in our community*.

New evidence is shedding light on the potential health impacts associated with vaping, raising concerns about the future health burden it may impose on users.

The Hobart CBD became smoke-free from 15 April 2020, which includes e-cigarettes.

In response to this growing e-cigarettes issue, the City of Hobart is taking proactive measures to address misinformation and support those looking to quit vaping.

Chair of the Healthy Hobart Portfolio Will Coats expressed deep concern over the rise in e-cigarette use and emphasised the importance of educating the community about its potential risks.

"It's alarming to see the increasing prevalence of e-cigarette use, especially among young people,” Cr Coats said.

“As a community, it's crucial that we address this issue head-on by providing accurate information and resources to help individuals make informed decisions about their health."

Cr Coats highlighted the need to dispel myths surrounding vaping.

"There are numerous myths circulating on social media and in our community about the safety of e-cigarettes and their contents,” Cr Coats said.

“It's essential that we debunk these myths and provide factual information to ensure the well-being of our residents, particularly our youth.”

To combat the spread of misinformation and support those interested in quitting vaping, the City of Hobart with support from Healthy Tasmania will be stationed in the Elizabeth St Mall next to the Information Booth on Thursday, 15 February 2024, from 12pm to 4:30pm.

The event will feature myth-busting and informational posters, along with resources for individuals seeking assistance in quitting or helping others to quit.

Cr Coats encouraged members of the community, especially young people, to take advantage of the resources available at the event.

"We urge anyone concerned about their vaping habits or seeking guidance on how to support a friend or family member to visit us in the Mall,” Cr Coats said.

“Together, we can work towards creating a healthier and more informed community.”
