The $1.2 million first stage of Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) three-stage Kuhls Road Rehabilitation project at Highfields is open to traffic (from Thursday, December 21, 2023).

TRC Infrastructure Services Committee Chair Cr Carol Taylor said the first stage involved rehabilitating 640m of Kuhls Road between Berghofer Drive and Bunya View Drive.

“Work started in October 2023 on stormwater improvements and the provision of an asphalt pavement on this initial stage of the project for rehabilitating the 1.25km section of Kuhls Road from Cawdor Road to Bunya View Drive,” Cr Taylor said.

“Some minor finishing works and final landscaping, including turfing are to be completed in Stage 1 in the New Year.

“This milestone marks 40% of the total project, with stages two and three to be delivered in the first half of 2024, maintaining access to Peacehaven Botanic Park during the project.

“Stage 2 is scheduled to start from Monday, January 8, 2024, with an anticipated completion by Easter 2024, weather permitting. This stage involves a temporary road closure between Berghofer Drive and Peacehaven Botanic Park. An alternate route will be signposted.

“RMA Engineers completed the design work for the first stage, with Council’s Construction and Maintenance crews delivering the works.”

Cr Taylor said significant volumes of materials were used in the first stage, including: • 4000 tonnes of earthworks, • 3000 tonnes of gravel, • 700m of kerb and channel, • 70m³ of concrete, • 8000 litres of bitumen, and • 670 tonnes of asphalt.

“Council is very grateful for the community’s patience and cooperation during the construction phase,” Cr Taylor said.

“Council will ensure local temporary traffic management is implemented in the next construction stage where appropriate to keep construction workers, road users, pedestrians and cyclists safe.

“I acknowledge and thank Council’s construction crew for their great work on this project to date.”
