At the November Council Meeting, Council approved to proceed with the installation of the detailed design submission “Welcome Gesture” by David Hamilton and Geoff Farquhar-Still.

The $1.25 million State Government funded pataway/Burnie Gateway Project is set to enhance and improve the entrance to the city.

Through Councils community consultation process, complimented by feedback from the CBD Reference Group which includes members of the community, the preferred design was chosen and put forward for Councils endorsement.

The sculpture by David Hamilton and Geoff Farquhar-Still is designed to resemble the wave of a hand greeting visitors to the City of Burnie. It will be located on the island between Wilson Street and Marine Terrace (east of Bunny Island) on the Bass Highway.

Burnie Mayor, Teeny Brumby said;

“The gateway will signal the next exciting chapter in Burnie’s story as a step towards creating a new vision for the city’s future, for our local community and for our visitors.”

The concept design will now undergo a final approval process by the Department of State Growth, with planned installation to commence in the new year, utilising local providers where possible.
