Landholders invited to join planting project to tackle climate change

Last updated on 28 August 2023

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is inviting landholders with ten hectares or more to participate in a native planting project to help take action against climate change at a local level.

Led by the North Central Catchment Management Authority (NCCMA), Macedon Ranges is one of the partner councils involved in the Community Carbon pilot project alongside City of Greater Bendigo, Hepburn Shire Council and Mount Alexander Shire Council.

The pilot project is aimed at helping local councils reach their net-zero emission goals, while providing private landholders with financial support for revegetation efforts.

Benefits to landholders of growing more trees and shrubs on their properties include:

attracting diverse wildlife improving the aesthetic appearance of their property reducing soil erosion improving soil health enhancing water quality.

On a larger scale, obtaining carbon with trees and shrubs grown on local private land helps to combat biodiversity loss and restore native habitat across the region.

Properties with a cumulative area of 10 hectares will be prioritised, however smaller, high-value areas for revegetation will also be considered.

Eligible properties must be within the NCCMA’s region – for the Macedon Ranges, that includes towns of Malmsbury, Kyneton and Woodend and lands surrounding these towns.

Expressions of interest close Saturday 30 September. For more information, visit the NCCMA website.

This program is contributing to Council’s Counting Down to Zero Plan and our goal of zero-net emissions for operations by June 2030.
