Submissions closed for Salamanca stallholders’ licence agreement

The City of Hobart’s consultation period with Salamanca stallholders over the new licence agreement has now closed.

The City has received 107 stallholder submissions and eight non-stallholder submissions during the 30-day consultation period that will now be presented to the Hobart City Council elected members for consideration as part of their decision-making process for the new licence agreement.

As part of the proposed licence agreement, an independent valuation concluded that site fees are currently under-valued, in line with the two previous valuations (2017 and 2022).

Of the 268 licenced stallholders, 259 have already indicated there wish to renew their licence by July 1.

This is the end of an extensive, comprehensive engagement process with Salamanca stallholders.

The City has held nine stallholder workshops between September 2022 and March 2023, as well as additional meetings with the Salamanca Market Stallholders’ Association, who also received a full briefing from the independent valuer who conducted the review of stallholders’ fees.

Hobart City Economy Portfolio Chair Louise Bloomfield said the City of Hobart was 100 per cent committed to the Salamanca Market – Tasmania’s most visited tourist attraction.

“We understand and appreciate the value the market brings to the community, to the city and to Tasmania,” Ald Bloomfield said.

“We are listening to stallholders about their concerns and thoughts for the future of the market.

“The additional revenue from a site fee increase will allow the City to maintain the growth and development of Salamanca Market during continuing uncertain economic times.

“We are looking to reinvest the additional licence fees back into the market through several initiatives suggested by stallholders and market staff.

"We’ll also be providing additional training opportunities for stallholders, and to continue to implement safety and compliance measures expected of a world class market like Salamanca.”

Elected members will be considering the consultation findings at the 22 May council meeting.
