Repairs to flood-damaged roads underway

Work to repair Gannawarra Shire Council-managed roads damaged during the October-December 2022 floods are underway.

More than 1,000 kilometres of Council’s 2500-kilometre road network was impacted by the floods, with repairs to Council-managed infrastructure estimated to be up to $50 million.

“Council is committed to returning our road network to a pre-flood standard,” Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

“The ability for flood-impacted residents to access their properties is a key focus of recovery efforts, as it helps residents remain connected to services and their communities.”

Council is working with a panel of contractors to undertake repairs to the road network, which includes resheeting gravel roads, replacing culverts, rehabilitating shoulders on sealed roads and repairing bridge abutments.

“Early investigations found that 308 roads were impacted by the floods, however we are undertaking further assessments to ensure all damage is noted,” Mr Rollinson said.

“These investigations will not only ensure our road network is repaired to a standard residents expect, but will also assist Council in advocating to the State and Federal governments for financial support to help with the Gannawarra’s recovery from these floods.

“It is important to note that Regional Roads Victoria is responsible for the maintenance of highways and major roads in the Gannawarra. Council is continuously advocating on behalf of the community to ensure these roads are also repaired and improved.”

Motorists are advised to adhere to reduced speed limits that will be in place whilst repairs to Council-managed roads are occurring.
