Storm recovery works ensure safer fire access tracks

In the coming weeks Bushfire Recovery Victoria (BRV) and their contractors, Johns Lyng Group (JLG), will be conducting hazard reduction works along a number of Council-managed Fire Access Tracks.

Works will commence Monday 5 September and are expected to take approximately three weeks to complete.

This initiative will clear damaged and hazardous trees that may impact the effectiveness of Fire Access Tracks, while balancing conservation values.

Council arborists and Environmental unit staff have undertaken assessments of the proposed clean- up sites and will continue to work closely with JLG and BRV to ensure high value conservation areas along fire tracks are not unduly impacted.

“More than one year on from the June severe storm event, clean up works to improve public safety and support the natural environment continue,” said Maria Weiss, Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Director Community.

“Council continues to advocate for local priority projects and we welcome this funding which will ensure Fire Access Tracks in the Macedon Ranges are ready ahead of the coming fire season,” she said.

Residents may see works crews and machinery during this time and are encouraged to proceed with due caution, as they would with any works in the shire.

If residents see tree-clearing activity on Fire Access Tracks and are unsure if they are part of this approved clean up, we encourage them to contact Council and report any suspicious tree or native vegetation removal.

Council continues to advocate on behalf of our community and work with state government to secure funding and support for vital clean-up works.
