Council starts clean up after extreme weather

Redland City Council crews have commenced a clean-up across the city following the recent extreme weather and is urging the community to report all hazards.

Residents are encouraged to report flooding, sewage inundation, fallen trees and damaged roads to Council so there is a record and a list of works which will be prioritised.

Council crews have been busy investigating reports of fallen trees and branches, and damage to roads.

Drivers are urged to take care on the roads as there may be debris and damage which could take some time to repair.

Please do not travel around looking at the damage around the city or in our neighbouring areas. Remember, if it’s flooded, forget it.

Council mowing crews will be out as soon as possible, and residents are encouraged to be patient as we deal with long grass expected across the city as a result of the rain.

Walking trail closed following land slip

Council has closed off a walking trail at the base of the Esplanade at Wellington Point following a land slip.

Council has inspected the area and will seek expert advice on securing the area.

In the meantime, residents and visitors are advised to stay clear of the area.

Sewerage issues

Due to the current significant weather event, stormwater has infiltrated sewerage systems throughout the SEQ region, causing some stormwater manholes to lift (as they are designed to do).

The majority of this overflow is rainwater so any wastewater is heavily diluted.

But it is very important to ensure people (particularly children) and animals don’t enter or play in any overflowing water in public or on private property.

Residents should contact Council on 3829 8999 or via email [email protected] to report any wastewater discharge on private property so an officer can inspect and provide advice.

Usually, discharge on private properties is released through the property’s overflow relief gully (ORG), located on the outside of the house, so make sure the ORG (a raised circular grate covering a drain) remains clear.

If your toilet is gurgling it usual means your ORG is doing its job and preventing discharge occurring inside your house.

Impacts on kerbside bin collections

Redland City Council’s rubbish collection contractor JJ’s Waste and Recycling suspended the emptying of yellow-lidded recycling bins today as there was no access to the Visy recycling facility due to the flood situation.

However, Council has received advice from Visy Recycling that operations at their recovery facility will resume on Tuesday, 1 March.

This means kerbside recycling collections will occur as scheduled tomorrow.

Any recycling bins that could not be collected today (in Capalaba, Alexandra Hills and Birkdale) will be collected by Wednesday.

All other waste collections will proceed as normal but localised flooding may also impact collection of general and green waste from some properties.

Bins missed due to flooding and road closures with be collected when possible.

Cleaning up tips

Take care to dry and clean your house and belongings, throwing away anything that cannot be cleaned.

When floodwater subsides it can leave mould, germs and in some cases sewerage behind. Consider engaging a professional to disinfect your property and keep children and pets away until the clean-up is completed.

All of Council’s Recycling and Waste Centres on the mainland and islands are open as usual today.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted further wet weather this week so make sure you are prepared.

The following local roads remain impacted by flooding or hazards:

Allan Day Drive, Wellington Point Pitt and Nelson Roads, Wellington Point Tulloch Drive / Redgrove Avenue – Wellington Point Avalon Road, Sheldon Rickertt Road, Ransome/Thorneside Cleveland Redland Bay Road, Redland Bay (hazard, proceed with caution).

Facilities reopening

The IndigiScapes Centre, Café and Nursery will reopen tomorrow Tuesday 1 March. The botanic gardens and tracks will remain closed.

Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland will remain closed tomorrow Tuesday 1 March.

Redland Art Gallery, Capalaba will reopen at 9am on Tuesday 1 March.
