Riddells Creek Leisure Centre to be Expanded

Council is committed to supporting community health and wellbeing, and the joint funding announcement by the Hon. Mary-Anne Thomas and Council for the $230,000 expansion of the Riddells Creek Leisure Centre is welcome news for community groups and local residents.

The Victorian Government’s funding of $230,000 from the Growing Suburbs Fund will see the Riddells Creek Leisure Centre multi-purpose room expanded to include a kitchenette, additional storage, and more functional space for a range of leisure programs.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said Council welcomed the funding announcement, as the Riddells Creek Leisure Centre is an important recreational hub for more than 31,000 residents who live within 15-20mins of the facility.

“Council has been aware of requests from local groups for more indoor spaces for leisure and community activities in and around Riddells Creek, and without nearby suitable facilities residents have been required to travel significant distances to participate.”

“Council has recognised the community demand and noted the increase of community run programs in the growing areas of Gisborne and New Gisborne and Riddells Creek, so the Riddells Creek Leisure Centre project has been prioritised to address gaps in indoor leisure program spaces in these communities.”

“The multi-purpose room expansion will help meet critical local community infrastructure needs while supporting the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub development in New Gisborne,” Cr Anderson said.

Construction is expected to commence in April 2022 and once completed the project will deliver a range of community, social and environmental benefits:

Improved indoor leisure program for over 55’s, females, all abilities, children 0-12yrs and those from lower socio-economic families. Inclusive community facilities that transcend age groups and cultural barriers Improved localised employment generated through the provision of services and programs. Providing a greater diversity in facilities creating opportunities for greater social interaction and a feeling of involvement. Improved environmental outcomes and sustainable design with the inclusion of ESD initiatives such as solar, double glazing and recycled materials.
