Dark Mofo glow turns market red

Everything is red this Saturday as Dark Mofo casts a ruby glow over Tasmania’s Own Market at Salamanca.

Stallholders at Salamanca Place this week will showcase an array of red wares – from clothing to art, jewellery, donuts, and even gin – in honour of the iconic winter festival.

Market patrons are invited to add to the colourful affair by wearing something red, with spot prizes on offer throughout the day.

Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said it was a great way to embrace the Dark Mofo vibe while supporting local businesses.

“Hobart residents are so proud to host this special festival that celebrates our city and the winter solstice. It’s one of the big highlights of every year,” Cr Reynolds said.

“Our whole city is going red for Dark Mofo and the market is no exception. If you don’t already have something red to wear, you can always pick up a hat, scarf or jumper from one of the many quality stalls and support a local business while you’re at it.”

The Everything is Red promotion expands on Destination Southern Tasmania’s Paint the Town Red initiative. Marketgoers are invited to snap a selfie at the market and post with the tags #wearreddarkmofo #salamancamarket and #pttr2021

Cr Reynolds said the City of Hobart had invested more than $1.7 million in Dark Mofo since its inception in 2013 and continued to be a strong supporter of the festival.

“Dark Mofo has become such an important and iconic event for our city and we’re thrilled that it’s been able to go ahead this year,” she said.

“The City of Hobart has continued to support the Winter Feast through providing equipment and in-kind support, and we’ve supplied venues free of charge for program events like the Ogah-Ogah burning, Nude Solstice Swim. The Regatta Grounds have also been made available for free parking throughout the festival.”
