Proposed planning amendment supports rural living

Published on 04 May 2021

Corangamite residents are invited to have their say in the future of rural living in the Shire.

The proposed Amendment C51 to the Corangamite Planning Scheme is available for comment here, at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning website, and in hard copy at the Civic Centre, 181 Manifold Street, Camperdown.

Mayor Ruth Gstrein said the amendment aimed to ensure the Shire remains a premier rural lifestyle location with diversity in housing supply.

“I encourage residents to read the proposal and have their say on these new guidelines which will be very important for the prosperity of our Shire,” Cr Gstrein said.

“The proposed amendment includes recommendations of the ‘Corangamite Rural Living Strategy’ which Council adopted in 2019. The amendment will be a guide to long-term growth, while ensuring our valuable agricultural land is managed sustainably. It’s all about the smartest and best use of land to provide opportunities.”

Manager Planning and Building Services Aaron Moyne said the amendment would ensure rural living occurs in a coordinated way.

“We are taking a staged approach to rural living. It involves some rezoning, amending existing schedules to the Rural Living Zone, applying a new schedule to the Development Plan Overlay and the introduction of policy statements to support rural-residential development,” Mr Moyne said. “The proposed amendment will have benefits by rationalising land available for immediate rural-residential development and leveraging the attraction and strategic advantages of Corangamite Shire’s townships to sustain rural-residential growth.”
