June Howard, who has guided community groups to a number of significant achievements for Devenish and wider community has been announced as the 2021 Benalla Rural City Citizen of the Year.

Projects and groups which June has made a significant contribution to include the Devenish Cemetery Trust, For the Good of Devenish, Devenish Public Hall Committee of Management, Devenish Primary School, Aged Friendly Group – Benalla, Devenish Silo Art Committee, North East Art Trail Group, Devenish Uniting Church and the Devenish Craft Group.

Australia Day award winners across 11 categories have been awarded, being;

Benalla Rural City Citizen of the Year – June Howard Benalla Rural City Young Citizen of the Year –  Lia Greenhalgh COVID-19 Most Helpful Citizen  – Alan Prideaux Benalla Rural City Community Group of the Year – Benalla Theatre Company Baddaginnie Achiever of the Year – Baddaginnie Opportunity Shop Benalla Achiever of the Year – Anna Smith Devenish Achiever of the Year –  June Howard Goorambat Achiever of the Year – Alan Prideaux Tatong Achiever of the Year – Pat Manser Thoona Achiever of the Year – Thoona Community

Chair, Australia Day Advisory Committee, Cr Bernie Hearn said the nominations across all categories demonstrate the community mindedness that exists within the community.

“I congratulate all our winners as well as every individual and group that was nominated,” Cr Hearn said.

“Our community could not achieve what it does without their outstanding efforts.”
