Youth employment training, manufacturing and industry start-ups and a home to social enterprises are just a few of the ideas on the table for the former Oakey Depot.

During the Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Ordinary Meeting on 19 January, Councillors approved plans to prepare a business case for a combined use for the Oakey depot site, which would include a Manufacturing Industry Business Incubator Precinct for the Oakey depot site.

With employees having relocated to the Charlton Principal Depot, TRC Environment and Community Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said this was an exciting opportunity for the re-use of the site.

“The Oakey community has a strong history in the manufacturing industry and we want to maintain this presence in the town,” Cr O’Shea said.

“The idea we would like to move forward with is to create a space that maintains key functionality for Council business while also incorporating a Business Incubator and Training Hub centre within the location.

“A Business Incubator and Training Hub centre could be established to encourage business growth in the Region and assist in economic recovery and develop vital employment, particularly in the youth sector.

“We see a lot of potential in this idea and opportunities to connect with groups such as the school. The Oakey State High School already houses a Trade Training Centre and the establishment of this facility could be an extension of the work happening at the school.

“Further to this, a partnership could be sought with Education Queensland, TAFE and other training providers and employment agencies to establish and realise the opportunity in connecting youth with training and ultimately employment.

“It would also present chances for start-ups, whether that be manufacturing, recycling, transport and logistics.

“We’ve already spoken with the Oakey Chamber of Commerce and other key stakeholders who have expressed interest in this idea. As we progress further, we will continue to consult with all users on the site, including the cricket club and SES, who remain part of our plans.”

A business case will now be prepared and brought back to Council for consideration.
