Repairs to Nichols Point Rotunda

Published on 24 December 2020

The Nichols Point Rotunda has undergone minor repairs this month thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).

Works have focused on the Rotunda’s timber framing and cladding, while the Victorian Heritage-listed site will get a new coat of paint.

The works aim to reduce deterioration and further damage to the Rotunda and are not expected to harm the cultural heritage significance of the site.

A detailed conservation management plan has also been prepared to set priorities for future works at the site, and is a requirement of the Heritage Council of Victoria.

The plan includes an assessment of significance, identifies issues that could arise, and contains an action plan of works.

Council has also received a Heritage Permit Exemption, ensuring that any maintenance works will not harm the cultural heritage significance of the rotunda.

Council’s Facility services team has been managing the repairs, which are being undertaken by a local building contractor with experience working on Heritage-identified sites.

Works are expected to be completed by February 2021.
