Driving social connection through storytelling

Strathbogie Shire has launched its Strathbogie Story project, which aims to assist those who may feel overcome with loneliness and isolation, as we continue to support each other through the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The initiative encourages community connection through highlighting stories from many colourful local identities, who share their experiences as they, too, face ongoing challenges and hardship.

Their resolve, character and good-humour will showcase the sense of community and pride for which our region is best-known.

Their very individual, personable stories will be told through a series of video clips, written articles and digital media content.

The Strathbogie Story also includes fun initiatives such as a children's storybook project, through which primary school-aged children will be encouraged to write their own stories.

In addition, free and beautifully designed postcards will be placed at collection-points throughout the Shire, so locals can send messages of support to loved-ones near and far.

All content will be uploaded to a newly designed, purpose-built website (www.strathbogiestory.com), where community members can view and share others' experiences of the pandemic.

Strathbogie Shire Mayor, Cr Amanda McClaren, said many in our region need pathways and reassurance to engage with their community.

"Understandably, we are hearing many stories of people feeling isolated and lonely, and experiencing genuine distress. When people are feeling like this, it's vital they know they're not alone," Cr McClaren said.

Cr McClaren said staying connected is essential to maintaining good health and wellbeing.

"For those already isolated before the pandemic hit, it's now even harder. More than ever, we need to ensure everyone is safe and well," Cr McClaren said.

"As we all continue to adapt and live in these uncertain times, we will remain engaged with our community and encourage everyone to stay connected."

The Strathbogie Story is part of the Shire's RE3 campaign, which provides the community with the capacity to 'Reset, Reboot and Revitalise'.

The Strathbogie Story in focus

A series of video clips featuring local identities, which will be uploaded to the new website and posted to Strathbogie Shire's social media channels.

Through partnerships with local schools, children across the Shire will be encouraged to create their own colourful short-stories. These stories will be posted to the website, while numerous hard copies will be published and available to view at local libraries.

A series of six postcards, featuring striking images of the Shire, which locals can send to loved-ones. This project is designed to connect with audiences who may not have access to the internet.
