Ipswich City Council launches grassroots sustainability campaign

19 August 2020

Ipswich City Council has this week launched its new Sustainability in the Suburbs campaign, highlighting the region’s steps towards a sustainable future and empowering the community to make greener choices.

The campaign provides an opportunity for the community to be involved in promoting sustainability and celebrating Ipswich’s grassroots environmental achievements.

It features videos of Ipswich residents and local businesses sharing their sustainability stories, knowledge and ideas.

Environment and Sustainability Committee chairperson councillor Russell Milligan said the campaign was in response to recent feedback from the community.

“Our Sustainability in the Suburbs campaign is all about working together to protect and enhance our environment and its liveability now and into the future,” Cr Milligan said.

“We have taken community ideas and feedback from last year’s Sustainable Ipswich engagement, and are now sharing local stories focussing on these topics through the new campaign.

“Thanks to these activities and tips, residents and businesses can see how easy it is to be sustainable in a practical, grassroots way.”

Cr Milligan encouraged the Ipswich community to get involved in the campaign.

“Sustainability in the Suburbs has so many different voices from our community offering their tips and tricks on various sustainability activities across the region,” he said.

“It features a number of unique local perspectives, from a Pine Mountain resident sharing his land restoration journey to the Ipswich businesses highlighting the different ways they are becoming more sustainable.

“Anyone can get involved by jumping on to the Sustainability in the Suburbs website or by sharing their own sustainability tips using #sustainableipswich.”

The Sustainability in the Suburbs videos will be released on Ipswich First.

The first instalment will feature gardening professional Kate Wall sharing her tips for creating a backyard veggie patch suited to Ipswich conditions, and is scheduled for release on Saturday, 22 August.
