A few weeks ago we asked members of the community to share some random acts of kindness with us. Your stories were so uplifting and inspiring, that Council decided to join the Be Kind movement.

Council recently launched Be Kind Maroondah – a campaign that focuses on being kind to yourself, others and business during these challenging and uncertain times.

“During this period of self-isolation, the Maroondah community has rallied to show amazing community spirit,” said Deputy Mayor, Cr Marijke Graham.

“From teddy bears in windows, to rainbow chalk drawings and kind notes in letterboxes, our community has truly stepped up to stay connected.”

“And while some restrictions are slowly lifting, we want to encourage that spirit to continue,” she said.

“In times of uncertainty, the smallest act of kindness can make a world of difference. We want to share these stories with our community and inspire others to also be kind,” Cr Graham said.

“We have created the hashtag #BeKindMaroondah and encourage the community to show others how we can be kind to each other; be kind to ourselves; and be kind to local businesses.”

An act of kindness can be something as simple as reaching out to a friend, colleague or loved one, smiling and waving at your neighbours, supporting local businesses by ordering your favourite takeaway food or using social media to share acts of kindness happening in your neighbourhood.

“Not only have we seen residents supporting each other, but businesses have also done a great job in supporting our community,” Cr Graham said.

“We have seen local businesses donate Mother’s Day packs for mothers who attend Council’s Supported Playgroups, hand sanitiser supplied to childcare facilities, plus 2,000 rolls of toilet paper for distribution through Council’s Aged & Disability Services when sources were scarce. As well, there have been nutritious pre-packed meals and donated food hampers for distribution through local relief and aid agencies,” she said.
