Corangamite Shire Council has been reviewing all of its operations to minimise risk to community health and safety in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Mason said the global health emergency was changing rapidly and Council was implementing its pandemic plan.

“The safety of our community is absolutely our top priority,” Mr Mason said.

Following State Government advice to cancel non-essential gatherings, the opening of the Lismore water tower and Health and Wellbeing Expo have been postponed until further notice.

Other planned Council events and services are being considered, based on State Government advice and potential risk.

“Services such as kindergarten, child care, and maternal and child health will continue to run based on advice from the State Government, however, the situation could change very quickly,” Mr Mason advised.

The Council meeting in Timboon on Tuesday 24 March will go ahead and will be livestreamed for residents who do not wish to attend.

At this stage the Civic Centre will remain open, but customers are encouraged to do business with us over the phone or here.

“There is no way to predict how long this pandemic will last but we expect further changes to our services as the situation changes,” Mr Mason said.

“We will keep the community informed through our usual channels: our website, social media, e-News and via local newspapers and radio.

“We have set up a webpage which will be updated regularly, as we receive new information about the local situation.

“The most authoritative source of expert information and current updates is the Department of Health and Human Services website where you can subscribe for updates. DHHS has a dedicated 24-hour hotline on 1800 675 398. If you suspect you may have coronavirus, call the hotline. Keep Triple Zero (000) for emergencies only.

“At this stage the most important thing is to slow the spread of the virus, so our health system isn’t overwhelmed and people who need care get the attention they need.

“Everyone has a role to play in this. The most effective methods for reducing the spread of coronavirus are listed below.”

washing your hands often with soap and water, before and after food, and after the toilet, for at least 20 seconds. Dry with a paper towel or hand dryer. avoid touching your face, eyes, nose or mouth. Cover your sneeze or cough with a tissue or cough into your elbow. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Don’t shake hands. Social distancing: stay at least 1.5m from others.

The Australian Government Department of Health website also provides helpful information as the situation changes.
