Ready to take your music career into the recording studio? 

After the success of its new industry development program in 2019, the City of Ballarat Youth Services team’s FReeZA committee is bringing back its SONIKA Records project for 2020. 

Applications for SONIKA Records 2020 are now open. 

Young Ballarat musicians and bands, aged between 12-25, now have the chance to apply for the opportunity to record one original song at Melbourne’s Studio 52. 

A handful of young Ballarat musicians and bands will be selected to develop their music business skills. This program will enable the selected participants to:    

record one original song in a professional recording studio   receive an in-studio professional photo and video shoot  receive a 30-minute mentoring session  participate in an album launch at Ballarat’s Live Music Venue - Volta  be included in a promotional package distributed to local booking agents  receive a fully mastered track for distribution  gain vital industry and performance experience.  

All recordings will be compiled onto the SONIKA Records Volume 2 album. The album will be released for sale to the public at an album launch at Volta on 23 August. 

Each song will also be entered into the Triple J Unearthed competition with councils and schools, with an ARIA-style awards night set to be held later this year.  

Musicians and bands will be able to use their recording to upload to Triple J Unearthed, iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud. This is an amazing opportunity to get some extremely valuable resources for free!

Applicants must:   

- be aged between 12-25  

- have an original song ready to record  

- be available to record at Studio 52 on July 1 or 2, 2020 

- be able to record a 15 minute set.   

This is a free FReeZA fully supervised, drug, smoke and alcohol-free program. With an all-expenses paid trip to Studio 52. 

Last year, several SONIKA Records participants performed at Spilt Milk and in Triple J Unearthed while participants Meraki Minds and Shon Dunn placed best song in their categories at the Kool Skools Awards.
