Great falls across the region...
Boulia Shire Council 30 Jan 2020

It has been wonderful hearing about all the reports of good rain across the region. The falls appear widespread and although there are several flood warnings and incidents of flash flooding so far - fingers crossed - it has not yet gone from joy to the calamity of last February. Here in Mount Isa we had our biggest falls from Saturday into Sunday. I would argue that the new Isa St Bridge passed its first test although it had to be closed for a day or so. The bridge was never designed to stop all floods but it showed its resilience with very little damage other than a clean-up and for the most part it was open even in times when the other causeways flooded. I have every reason to believe this was seven million well spent and not the disaster some on social media are painting it out to be. Elsewhere Cloncurry seemed to be missing out until the deluge came on Wednesday. The 100 mm plus they received was enough to send the Chinaman Creek dam from 70 to 100 percent full and it's always impressive to watch videos of the water piling over the spillway though some might wish more was captured. It's likely water is now spilling over Lake Julius too as it reached 100% on Wednesday. Lake Moondarra is filling up nicely but still has a fair way to go at 74.7%. The extra water was noticeable when I went for my lakeside walk on the holiday Monday and I had to take a few extra detours. It's rainy season in the Gulf so it's no surprise areas like Normanton and Burketown are seeing plenty of water at the moment. Normanton copped a whopping 154.4mm on Wednesday while Burketown got 84.0mm on Monday. Areas to the east are getting a good drink too. Richmond and Hughenden have had a steady flow of rain though the downpour at Prairie led to a rail incident and some unorthodox ways of getting to the pub including a windsurfer! Winton was cut off after its 117mm on Tuesday and the Georgina at Camooweal is flowing after its 141mm on Sunday. Even Boulia finally got some rain 76.0mm on Saturday.

Great falls across the region
