Beating school holiday boredom is easy in the Western Downs this summer, with a jam-packed calendar of activities scheduled across the region over coming weeks.

There’s plenty on offer across all Council facilities including libraries, pools, and art galleries reaching every interest and age group.

Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said Council offered a comprehensive school holiday activity program, as part of the region’s vibrant, active communities.

“The Western Downs is home to a range of exciting and interactive spaces encouraging people to head outdoors and try something new in their local community,” Cr Maguire said.

“With warm temperatures, the region’s much-loved aquatic centres will again prove popular these school holidays, offering a fun place to cool down, exercise and have a splash at several towns across the region.

“Our libraries have a packed schedule of events and activities, with several Christmas-themed events taking place over the coming weeks to help families beat the summer heat while getting into the Christmas spirit.

“The popular Christmas Storytime is returning this year, and residents of all ages can be a part of several craft sessions on offer including workshops on making your own advent calendar, Christmas decorations, and plenty more.

“There’s plenty to do once Christmas is over, with our libraries also offering workshops in photo preservation, robotics, rocket making, and other high-tech activities as part of our Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Squad.

“Our art galleries also provide the perfect spot to cool off while being inspired – and I encourage residents to check out all the fantastic exhibitions such as TRE360 by Kylie Bourne at Dogwood Crossing in Miles, Jabu Birriny by Yarrabah Artists at Lapunyah Art Gallery in Chinchilla, and The Graham Brandon Fine Art Collection by various Australian Masters at Gallery 107 in Dalby.”

Cr Maguire said the region’s parks and open spaces offered another prime opportunity to head outdoors and have some fun in the region.

“We’ve got so many fabulous parks in the region where people can head outside and have some fun with the family, whether it’s a picnic or a game of footy,” she said.

“The Chinchilla Botanic Parkland is a fantastic spot for the community to enjoy, offering the interactive water play area to cool down, and fun areas to explore such as the Aboriginal Culture and Megafauna Discovery Spaces.

“Western Downs Cinemas will also offer a great opportunity to chill out in the cool while enjoying all the latest flicks.

“On top of all Council is offering, families also have the opportunity to cheer on their home state at the Queensland Reds V New South Wales Waratahs match on 24 January at the Dalby Leagues Club. This Council-supported event will deliver endless fun for the whole family, and I encourage residents to get in and book their tickets by visiting www.trybooking.com.

“There really is something for everyone this summer school holidays and I encourage residents to get involved in their local community and be a part of all the great events happening across the region.”
