Livingstone Youth Action Group member and Yeppoon State High School student Thomas Morris is excited to see his recent anti-cyber bullying project make a difference to local youth in his community.

‘Take Time While Online’ is a local anti-cyber bullying project that the student and Livingstone Youth Action Group member created with the support of PCYC which was successful in receiving funding as part of the Queensland Governments Tackle Cyberbullying Grants.

Thomas and members of the Livingstone Youth Action Group spent this term developing messages like “Be a buddy, not a bully” and “Kind is the new cool” to encourage kind and safe behaviour online.

The messages have been printed on a variety of tech devices that will be distributed to local high school students with the aim to get young people to think twice before posting online.

Youth Councillor Pat Eastwood said the messages are short and clear and will be seen regularly and by many young people to promote the effects of cyberbullying.

“Through the repetition of these messages, they are more likely to be remembered and may deter inappropriateness from users while online,” Cr Eastwood said.

“Council would like to commend Thomas and the Youth Action Group team for empowering young people to become positive role models while encouraging others to think about how cyberbullying makes people feel and how we can stop it.

The Youth Action Group is encouraging more young people to join and get involved in similar projects, aimed at creating supportive and healthy environments for young people.

Members Thomas, Breanna and Chantelle encouraged other like-minded young people in the Livingstone region to get involved and help make a positive change in their community.

“Council wants to emphasise that you don’t have to be present at every meeting to be involved in the group because we recognise young people lead busy lives so any input, feedback or suggestions is always welcomed,” Cr Eastwood added.

The Action Youth Group is welcomes anyone aged between 12 to 24 years who is interested in playing a role in decisions that affect young people, developing new skills and are action focused to meet the aspirations of young people in Livingstone Shire.
