Council partners with local organisations to rehome pets

Deputy Mayor and Spokesperson for Planning and Environment Councillor Andrew Smith said Council was excited to partner with pet shops and community groups to help animals find forever homes.

“Council manages three pound facilities across the region, and along with managing lost or stray pets, our pounds also offer an adoption service for animals able to be rehomed,” Cr Smith said.

“Recently our pounds have experienced a high intake of kittens, and to ensure they can go to the best home possible, Council has been partnering with local businesses and community groups.

“As part of the arrangement, local business Jess’s Town and Country Barnyard has offered to display kittens at their premises free of charge so they can find their forever family more quickly. Council has also partnered with Kitt Kat Care, which is a not-for-profit organisation based in Brisbane, to rehome kittens from the Western Downs at no cost to Council.

“This is a fantastic way of the community working together to help these animals find the forever home they deserve while mitigating the pressures on our facilities and resources.”

Cr Smith said residents should think very carefully about whether a pet would suit their family before adopting.

“A new pet might seem like the perfect gift, but they are a huge responsibility and need to be considered carefully,” he said.

“There are many duties that come with being a responsible pet owner, such as microchipping, registration and ensuring your pet is healthy and kept safely and securely, and Council offers a range of information to assist pet owners to do the right thing.
