City welcomes funding for safe space

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds has welcomed an announcement that the Tasmanian Government will put $150,000 toward the establishment of a program to help the city’s homeless.

The City of Hobart is supporting the Salvation Army and Hobart City Mission to establish a Safe Night Space pilot program for people sleeping rough in Hobart.

“The establishment of a safe night space was a key priority identified by the Greater Hobart Homelessness Alliance,” Cr Reynolds said.

“This is a genuinely collaborative initiative to provide assistance for those in our community who need it most. The space will provide somewhere safe from the elements to spend the night and where they can connect with vital support services.

“The Salvation Army and Hobart City Mission are putting a great deal into getting this pilot program off the ground and the City of Hobart is working to make a Council owned venue ready to use for the pilot before the end of the year.”

“We’re pleased that the Tasmanian Government has also put its support behind this initiative, which will directly benefit people doing it tough in Hobart.”
