Spring is a great time on mounts for responsible dog owners

Spring is a great time to take your best friend for a walk on Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf.

Corangamite Shire Manager Environment and Emergency Lyall Bond said reserve users appreciated the small things responsible dog owners did to make sure everyone could enjoy the picturesque sites.

“While you’re enjoying the beautiful bush environment, it’s great if you can still show the courtesy you would in a park in town.

“We encourage dog owners to carry bags, clean up after your dog and keep it on a leash so it doesn’t chase protected wildlife.

“Most people do the right thing and we encourage dog owners to make a habit of carrying bags with them whenever they go out with their pet.”

Mr Bond said the requirement to carry a bag and pick up after your dog was a Local Law introduced in response to concern by residents and business owners.

“It’s in everybody’s best interests to keep our shared spaces clean from dog waste, for hygiene reasons as well as making sure everyone can enjoy their experience on the mounts,” he said.

“Picking up after your dog is part of responsible pet ownership and I would encourage owners to make sure they are carrying bags with them at all times.”

Mr Bond encouraged people to enjoy the Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf reserves and to exercise their dogs with respect for other people and the environment.

“Local laws officers patrol the areas and if they receive reports from the public, the usual penalties for cleaning up droppings, or having a dog not on the leash can apply.”
