The community is being encouraged to help reduce poverty and hardship in Livingstone by taking part in Council’s upcoming fundraising event on Friday 18 October during Anti-Poverty Week (13 – 19 October).

Community Development Councillor Jan Kelly said this important, inclusive event would provide a fantastic opportunity for residents to gain an increased understanding of poverty and how to take action collectively to end it, while enjoying a fun and creative morning in the Community Centre gardens.

“This year’s annual Anti-Poverty Awareness Day has some new and exciting additions that everybody can participate in while learning something new,” Cr Kelly said.

“The community-focussed event will feature free workshops on growing produce from food scraps and sustainable gardening, to everyday budgeting and clever food shopping hacks, a St Vincent de Paul’s fashion parade, a cake and plant stall, free sausage sizzle, plus a lucky gate prize of a family pass to Great Keppel Island!”

“We live in a beautiful part of the world but sadly, there are many people doing it tough within our region. Whether they are homeless, living between homes, struggling financially, having difficult family problems or relationship issues, it is important that these people feel supported during their most vulnerable moments.

“I strongly encourage anybody who can spare a few items to come along to this special event, to give back to our residents who need it most. You can support those in need by donating essential items like non-perishable food or men and women’s personal hygiene products.”

The Centre also accepts donations for other programmes connected to the ICare Community Project including Share the Dignity, Alternative Learning Spaces, Operations Education and the Yeppoon Salvation Army.

For those who can’t make it on the day but wish to donate, please phone 4913 3840 or drop in to the Community centre, 80 John St during business hours.

ICare Community Project donations that are welcome include non-perishable food items, women’s and men’s personal hygiene products like shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and blankets.
