Digital arts company Playable Streets returns to ArtSpace at Realm for an exciting new interactive project called

The interactive installation is a visual feast for the senses that invites visitors of all ages and abilities to touch, explore, experiment and play with sound.

Discover enchanting islands of sounds that are activated by walking or rolling across the floor, or collaborate with friends and strangers in an animated interactive experience with light, sound and collective musical play.

The creative brainchild of art technology wizards, Playable Streets, the project uses a series of pressure sensors; creating an environment in which you become the composer.

With each movement, visitors become musical collaborators. Sensors connected to multiple computers trigger movement into sound and which allows visitors to manipulate the ‘rising sea level’ – one of the themes of Islands – projected on the wall.

It’s where science and art come together.

Playable Streets Artistic Director Glen Walton says bringing images to life through interaction, sound and colour gives visitors the opportunity to engage with their environment in a fun and innovative way.

“By harnessing accessible technologies, innovations and new creative thinking, we enable experiences that allow people to reach out, touch their world, and connect with each other as playful collaborators,” he says.

Glen has spent the past month collaborating with audio-visual artist Bob Jarvis, musical composer Cayn Borthwick and RMIT digital media graduate Ayla Ashley Pajevic to bring the project to life.

“By fusing the talents of composers, engineers and visual artists, we (Playable Streets) design and create tactile interactive works that function simultaneously as art installations, collaborative musical instruments, and real-time science experiments,” Glen explains.

“We are fortunate to have RMIT graduate Ayla working with us as an intern. The ability to use her skills in media studio studies, coding and projection mapping and putting these into a gallery context has been fantastic,” adds Glen.

Islands is on until Sunday, 27 October 2019 at ArtSpace at Realm, 179 Maroondah Highway, Ringwood.

The event is open to all ages and abilities. Entry is free.
