You may have heard that one of Victoria's biggest recycling processors, SKM, has recently gone into insolvency after the Victorian Government shut down a number of their sites. This means recycling in our region isn't being processed at the moment.

Council is disappointed at this outcome. We're working with SKM, local Councils, and taking a number of other actions independently to try and restart recycling processing for our residents as quickly as possible.

How Council is responding

We're working as hard as we can to help recycling suppliers keep processing recycling. Some of the actions the Borough of Queenscliff is taking include:

Renegotiating contracts with recycling supliers Working with other councils in our region to make recycling more efficient Developing an organic waste collection program to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill

Fixing Victoria's recycling system requires a bigger effort than what the Borough can do alone, however. The Municipal Association of Victoria is advocating for greater investment from state and federal governments in solutions to the crisis. How you can help

There are a number of things you can do to help reduce your waste:

Keep using your yellow bin. While some recyclables are being landfilled at the moment, we'll be sending recycling on to be processed again as soon as we can. By continuing to use your yellow bin, we'll be able to make sure your recycling is sent for processing as soon as our suppliers get back on their feet.
