RIDE LIKE A GIRL will make a triumphant debut on home turf with the Regional Premiere of the film confirmed to take place on Sunday, 15 September at the Regent Cinema, Ballarat.  

Transmission Films will host the Regional Premiere in partnership with the City of Ballarat, who supported the production. Many key scenes from RIDE LIKE A GIRL were filmed in Ballarat. 

RIDE LIKE A GIRL is the incredible true story of local hero Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, and the film is the directorial debut from renowned Australian actor Rachel Griffiths. Michelle Payne and her brother Stevie Payne – her strapper for The Cup win and who steals the limelight playing himself in the movie - will be joined at the premiere by the film’s producer Richard Keddie. 

Ballarat residents will have the opportunity to walk the red carpet and watch the movie in advance before it hits cinemas nationwide.   Only 700 tickets are available for the Regional Premiere on Sunday, September 15 at 2.00pm (for 2.15pm screening)  at the Regent Cinema, Lydiard Street, Ballarat.   

RIDE LIKE A GIRL will be released in cinemas across Australia on 26 September 2019 by Transmission Films and stars Teresa Palmer as Michelle Payne alongside Sam Neill, Sullivan Stapleton, Magda Szubanski and Stevie Payne.  

Ballarat Mayor, Cr Samantha McIntosh said it was fitting that the story of such as inspirational talent such as Michelle Payne, would have its final Regional Movie Premiere in her hometown of Ballarat.  

 “This is an opportunity for Ballarat residents to acknowledge and celebrate the extraordinary story of Michelle Payne and her achievements in the racing industry,” she said.  

The movie trailer is the biggest post of the year for the City of Ballarat, reaching 87,000 people via social media channels.  

“This certainly reflects the interest in the movie, which was partly filmed in Ballarat with residents employed as ‘extras’, Cr McIntosh said. “The City is delighted to be co-hosting the premiere in Ballarat with Transmission films.”
