Council urges pet owners to de-sex their pets

Council is calling on pet owners to take advantage of the 20% discount for de-sexing their dog or cat as part of ‘Operation Wanted’.

Operation Wanted is a de-sexing initiative which involves local councils, local veterinary clinics and the RSPCA.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said it’s a great initiative to help with the over population of unwanted pets. “Each year we have hundreds of unwanted pets in our region. The solution to this is for pet owners to be responsible and de-sex their pets to stop backyard breeding and accidental litters.

“Operation Wanted is a campaign to tackle the problem and as a Council, we’re happy to support this initiative.

“So far Tableland Veterinary Service in Gill Street have de-sexed about 90 pets as part of Operation Wanted, with many pre-bookings until the end of the month. It’s great to see residents taking advantage of the discount, but we want to see as many as we can do the right thing.”

RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Michael Beatty says the message is simple, get your pets de-sexed.

“It prevents your dog or cat adding to the already huge number of unwanted kittens and puppies that end up at RSPCA shelters and then struggle to find a forever home.

“It’s a shocking thought, but a cat from just 4 months old can have up to three litters per year, resulting in thousands and thousands of unwanted kittens.

“By having your pet de-sexed, you’ll also save money on your council registration fee, so it’s a win win,” he said.
