Charters Towers Regional Council has announced that the reception area at the Administration Centre will temporarily close to allow for renovations.

The renovations have come after recommendations to improve safety, increase security measures and improve access for customers.

The improvements will include the replacement of the current counter which will provide desk-level access for wheelchair or seated patrons. Additional changes will also include swipe card security access into offices beyond the reception area.

Mayor Liz Schmidt said the renovations were a much-needed improvement to provide a safer and more customer-focused reception area.

“The current reception area doesn’t meet the needs of our community or our staff. We want to provide a level of security and service where all members of our community will feel welcomed and are able to interact with our staff.

“During the closure, we will have our customer service staff move temporarily up to City Hall. Any enquires can be made there or by phone on Council’s regular number.

“We appreciate the community’s patience during this time and hope for as little disruption as possible.”

Work is set to begin on 10 June and will require the reception area to be closed for approximately 1 week, opening again to the public 8:30 am, 17 June. City Hall reception will be open for all enquires during this period.

The renovations will be undertaken by a Townsville based contractor which offers the expertise to undertake the project and will utilise local suppliers and contractors for the works.
