'Creation Pathways' by Riki Salam

Wednesday, May 1 – Sunday, May 5, 2019 In celebration of this year’s Indigenous Art Program Shared Connections, we will be projecting Riki Salam’s 'Creation Pathways' onto the William Jolly Bridge from 1-5 May and 22–26 May, 5:30-10pm nightly. Brisbane City Council’s Indigenous Art Program is running from 1 May to 31 July 2019, join an artist talk, a panel discussion or guided walking tour to learn more about the artists and artworks. This year’s exhibition explores the theme of Shared Connections. It offers opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of Australia’s First Nations’ people. “We are proud to be the longest continuing culture on the planet. Unfortunately colonisation interrupted our cultural practices, particularly on the east coast of Australia. We as a community are relearning, regenerating and reinterpreting our identities through new mediums that reflect our past, present and future.Shared Connections aims to educate the wider community and present an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of our resilience, fortitude and progression.”  (Blaklash Projects, exhibition curators) Riki Salam is an accomplished artist with over 20 years' experience creating artworks for high profile projects across corporate, government, and not-for-profit sectors in Australia and internationally. Riki has connections to Muralag, Kala Lagaw Ya, Meriam Mer, Kuku Yalanji peoples on his Father's side and a member of the Ngai Tahu people in the South Island of New Zealand on his Mother's side. Creation Spirit travels across this land, bringing lore, bringing culture, country is created. Ceremony's performed, songs are sung - we are connected, we are one with this land. Skillful hands adapt and refine, knowledge is passed from generation to generation. Rituals and rites, lines direct and guide, tools exchanged - trade continues. Working together, our direction is clear, our ways are enriched, we celebrate as one. The artwork Creation Pathways was developed for the Sandvik Group, Australia, as a part of their Reconciliation Action Plan.
