Fire Danger Period ending in Yarra Ranges
Yarra Ranges Council 29 Apr 2019

The CFA-declared Fire Danger Period ended at 12am on Wednesday, 1 May in the Yarra Ranges.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Tony Stevenson, said that although the Fire Danger Period was finishing, residents needed to check the open air burning rules for their area.

“The Fire Danger Period helps to protect the Yarra Ranges during the worst of the fire season, when it’s easy for fires to happen and get out of control,” Cr Stevenson said.

“We had a long, dry season this year. Normally, we have about 200mm of rain in the Yarra Ranges during the Fire Danger Period – this year we had 45mm.

“Though restrictions are easing for burning off, residents still need to be aware of the Open Air Burning Local Law, and what that means for them.

“The Local Law controls what days residents can burn off in their area, as well as making clear how to ensure their burn is done safely and without impacting on neighbours.

“For example, burning off in our urban areas is prohibited year-round, so we encourage anyone in these areas to get rid of excess green waste through green waste bins, composting or a trip to their local tip.

“In other areas, burning is restricted to certain days and times, so it’s always best to check the Council website to get the right information for your property.”

Any burn off in the Yarra Ranges must be supervised, with a supply of tools and water available at all times to minimise the risk of fire spreading.

All planned burns must be reported to the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) on 1800 668 511. By notifying ESTA you ensure that your local CFA volunteers are called out only in emergencies.
