The City has acted quickly to ensure safety of beach goers, with an exclusion zone being created at the southern end of Miami Beach.

A 520sqm section of beach under the Mick Schamburg lookout will be cordoned off from tomorrow morning, following advice from geotechnical engineers that the area was at risk of potential rock falls.

The exclusion zone is likely to be permanent.

Divisional Councillor Pauline Young said the engineers undertook site investigation and slope risk assessment as part of the Don MacSween slope stabilisation project. This risk was identified as part of that assessment.

“Safety is our No 1 priority which is why we have acted on this quickly,” Cr Young said.

“We knew this project, which is about improving the long-term stability of Don MacSween and Mick Schamburg parks, would be challenging with the headland at the mercy of nature every day.’’

Cr Young said the temporary barriers would be in place until work on a permanent solution was completed later this year. Signage will also be installed.

“We know it is important to our community to maintain the natural beauty of the area and this will be front of mind when designs are created. I thank everyone for their patience at this time.”

She said this project was part of the city’s ongoing commitment to safety and protection of our beachfront assets and cited works at Greenmount in the south and Lions Head Reserve to the north as examples.
