Shine a light on sustainability during Earth Hour

Published on 26 February 2019

Council will show its support for sustainability by taking part in Earth Hour during March.

Earth Hour is a global environmental movement that seeks to raise awareness of climate change.

Solar Light Challenge

As part of Earth Hour, residents are being encouraged to visit Council’s stall at the Lancefield Market on Saturday 23 March between 9am and 1pm and learn how to assemble solar lights.

Council staff will be available to explain the project, and the assembly process.

The solar lights will then be sent overseas and distributed to remote communities in Papua New Guinea.

The project is part of Earth Hour’s Solar Light Challenge, and aims to increase social, educational, economic opportunities through bringing power and light to disadvantaged communities.

Switch Off

Earth Hour is again holding its worldwide Switch Off event on Saturday 30 March at 8.30pm.

The initiative sees millions of people turn off the lights in their home or business for one hour in a show of solidarity.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, and is now celebrated in over 180 countries and territories worldwide.
