Gympie Regional Council advise residents to keep up to date with the weather conditions and prepare properties for any adverse weather over the next few days.

Mayor Mick Curran, Gympie Local Disaster Management Group Chairman urges residentsto keep an eye on the conditions.

“We, like many people right up and down the coast, are watching Tropical Cyclone Oma. The Gympie Local Disaster Management Group are now on alert and are monitoring the cyclones progress,’ he said.

“At this stage we don’t know if or what the impact will be for our region, however it is a reminder to get yourself prepared for any weather that we might experience, especially if we do see strong winds across the region.

We’ve seen a lot of roof repairs and maintenance from the last storm we experienced and there maybe material that is unsecured, such as roofing iron. With predicted strong winds, it’s important to check and ensure you are prepared, tie down any loose items to reduce the damage they could cause.”

A helpful site for residents is the ‘get ready’ website which has a checklist for residents to help prepare for any extreme weather.

Mayor Curran also reminds residents that should we experience heavy rainfall, it’s important to drive to the conditions if you are on the road.

“Although we don’t know what the impact will be, it’s always worth reminding people that if it’s flooded, forget it.” commented Mayor Curran.
