Livingstone Shire Council’s long and rich history has now been officially preserved and well-documented after local resident Michael Prior traced it origins dating as far back as 1880.

The document, which was presented as a gift to the Council table at last week’s Ordinary Meeting, comprises lists of all Mayors, Councillors and CEO’s to have served Livingstone Shire Council, including when it was called Gogango, from 1880 to 2018, including the details of all elections, resignations, by-elections, and appointments.

Mayor Bill Ludwig said Council commended Mr Prior on collating such an important and detailed document that highlights our local government history.

“On behalf of Council, I must sincerely thank Mr Prior for putting so much of his time and effort into this work that not only reflects on our past for historical reference, but also recognises those people who’ve contributed tremendously towards shaping this community into what it is today,” Mayor Ludwig said.

Livingstone Shire resident and Council employee Michael Prior spent over three years part-time, thoroughly and painstakingly researching Council’s local government history in his own time, to compile the large body of work.

Mr Prior said he felt enormously proud of the document he was able to produce after many long hours of reading and cross-checking through old newspapers, files and documents.

“This document was gifted to Council from me as a private citizen, I’m just fortunate I was able to present it formally as a Council officer so it could be officially recorded,” Mr Prior said.

“I feel like this was a great way to close a chapter on my life as I head towards my retirement, while also acknowledging and giving recognition to all of those people who have contributed to our local government throughout that time,” Mr Prior said.

“I hope that people will appreciate that it was done properly, and place value on it in years to come.”
