City celebrations prove to be massive crowd-pleasers

The premiere of Ipswich City Council’s Christmas Wonderland and the annual New Year’s Eve event both scored bumper crowds.

A total of 14,470 people strolled through the inaugural Christmas Wonderland, which brought beautiful lights and decoration to Nerima Gardens in Queens Park.

The event went off without a hitch with the assistance of Ipswich City State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers and the support of Ipswich’s Sister City Nerima, Japan.

The busiest night was Sunday 23 December, where 2410 people strolled through the display.

Economic Development and Marketing Chief Operating Officer Ben Pole said there was a very positive response to Christmas Wonderland.

“It was a fantastic start to an event that will be a showcase for the city,” he said.

The success of Christmas Wonderland was followed by a massive crowd at Council’s New Year’s Eve event, with 6403 people at North Ipswich Reserve to celebrate the end of 2018.

Mr Pole said this was a significant crowd, with New Year’s events in previous years averaging 4000-45000 people.

“This event was fortunate to have perfect weather for families enjoying the free rides, entertainment and fireworks,” he said.
