Transition Towns Borough of Queenscliffe, in association with the Queenscliff and District Men's Shed, will hold its first Repair Café event at the Queenscliffe Neighbourhood House on Saturday 6 October 2018 from 10:00am until 12:00 noon.

A Repair Café is an event where specialists volunteers endeavour to fix broken items for the cost of parts and a small donation.

Transition Towns Borough of Queenscliffe is inviting people with skills such as sewing and mending, jewellery and clock repairs, and information technology, to donate their time and capabilities at the Queenscliff Repair Café.

“The Repair Café idea is a concept that aligns perfectly with Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community wellbeing,” said Borough of Queenscliffe Mayor, Cr Susan Salter.

“I encourage the handy people in our community to volunteer their services at the first Repair Café event in Queenscliff.”

To volunteer as a Repair Café specialist, please contact Brooke Connor, Transition Towns Borough of Queenscliffe Coordinator, on 0422 705 768.

People are invited to bring all sorts of broken items, apart from electrical goods, to the Repair Café. There will also be tools and materials available for people who would like to have a go at ‘do-it-yourself’ repairs, and the Repair Café specialists will be on hand to provide advice and guidance.

Transition Towns Borough of Queenscliffe hope that the Repair Café will create connections in the community, as well as helping people to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, minimise CO2 emissions and save money.

Journalist and publicist Martine Postma came up with the Repair Café concept in the Netherlands in 2009. Ms Postma started the Repair Café Foundation in 2010 to provide support to local groups interested in starting Repair Cafes around the world. Check out www.repaircafe.org to find out more.
