Council’s school crossing supervisor Shane Dawson has been named the best in the region by School Crossings Victoria.

Shane won the region three category in the 2018 Victorian School Crossing Supervisor of the Year Award, which incorporates supervisors from across Maroondah, Port Phillip, Stonnington, Bayside, Glen Eira, Whitehorse, Nillumbik and Monash.

Maroondah Deputy Mayor Councillor Mike Symon said being selected was a resounding endorsement of the way the school crossing supervisors perform their duties at school crossings.

“Council congratulates Shane Dawson on the award. It was members of the school community at Eastwood Primary School in Ringwood East who nominated Shane for the award, which shows how highly he is respected and appreciated by children, families and staff who use the crossing,” Cr Symon said.

Another three of Maroondah’s school crossing supervisors, Fiona Webster, Rima Soufi and John Kelly, were also nominated for the Victorian School Crossing Supervisor of the Year Award.

“Like Shane Dawson, Fiona Webster, Rima Soufi and John Kelly have all become key figures in the schooling community and are well deserving of the recognition that comes with being nominated for such an award,” Symon said.

The biennial award was established in 2010 by School Crossings Victoria to recognise and celebrate the contribution and spirit of work undertaken by school crossing supervisors throughout Victoria.

Cr Symon said this was the first-time nomination for each of the Maroondah school crossing supervisors.

“Shane Dawson and Rima Soufi both joined our school crossing supervising community in 2016. Fiona Webster and John Kelly are two of our longer-serving supervisors, Fiona having started with us 17 years ago and John seven years ago.

“The Maroondah community is fortunate to have such a group of caring and professional school crossing supervisors who perform a vital role in keeping our school crossings safe for all road users.

The awards were judged under the following criteria:

Professional demeanour and presentation Working knowledge of road rules relating to school crossings Welcoming, caring supportive and encouraging to all users of the school crossing Helpful – informative and clear on correct use of the crossing Involvement in the school community Attendance Punctuality
